Your Child's Mental Health Is Important

Finding anxiety books for kids can prove to be very difficult. Anxious Annie, written by Tiffany Saunders (illustrated by Anita Easterwood) helps to bring awareness and provide methods for children who are feeling anxious. At the end of the book you will find a list of resources to better meet the needs of a child in a professional setting.

Anyone who has struggled with anxiety knows the impact it can have on your daily life and mental being. It can have a huge impact on your esteem, family, and work routine, but does not have to be what determines how your day will go.

We as adults are quick to recognize this, but imagine the impact it has on children and their mental health. It is important on how children are cared for when experiencing these types of feelings. Even the parent with the best intent, can do more harm than good and cause the child to feel more uneasy. Teaching them to manage the anxiety triggers is key. The goal is not to eliminate it (because that might not be possible), but to recognize when it is happening and then come up with ways to minimize the stressor.

Helping the child to 'talk' through their fears is a great approach to practice before actually FACING it. It helps the child to conceptualize a plan of what action steps they would take in the event the trigger happened again. Addressing it in this manner is a healthy constructive way for the child to manage the anxiety. It is also important for you as a parent to model how to handle anxiety. We know our children are always watching and observing how we handle situations, how we interact with people we don't necessarily care for. They are listening to every phone call and conversating we have with other adults that may trigger anxiety and uneasiness. It is crucial to reflect those values that we want to see our children take on.

Here are some things that can help with addressing anxiety

- Counting to 10 slowly

- Do something you enjoy (go outside, draw or color, swim, dance)

- Listen to music & practice positive self-talk

- Take control of your thoughts

- Eating a healthy meal and getting plenty of rest

- Seek a pediatrician or licensed professional counselor (LPC)

Calming Breath Exercise

Imagine it’s your birthday party and everyone is waiting on you to blow out the candles. Take a long, slow breath in through your nose, hold your breath to the count of "three." Exhale slowly (making a small circle with your lips as if you are sending air through a straw). Make sure to relax the muscles in your face, jaw, shoulders, and stomach.

- Inhale calm & Exhale fear

- Inhale confidence & Exhale doubt

- Inhale Strength & Exhale weakness
